This ground plant, found in July 2026, Radnor firs, on the old forestry access path is a type of Sphagnum moss, commonly known as bog-moss or peat moss. Based on its pale lime-green color, robust star-like ("stellate") heads, and habit of colonizing damp, shaded forestry floors and old access tracks. Structure: The tightly packed, star-shaped rosettes at the top of the stems called capitula. Habitat: Thrive in waterlogged, acidic conditions like those coniferous damp ditches of the Radnor Forest SSSI.Ecological Value: Sphagnum mosses act like giant natural sponges, capable of holding up to 20 times their weight in water & lock away massive amounts of environmental carbon.

This plant is Cypress-leaved Plait-moss (Hypnum cupressiforme), a highly common and adaptable bryophyte. Appearance: It forms dense, interwoven green carpets. The slender shoots branch out irregularly and feature tightly overlapping leaves that curve dramatically downward to a fine point. This structure gives the individual stems a distinctive plaited appearance reminiscent of miniature cypress tree branches. Habitat Find along old, shaded conifer forestry. Thrives perfectly in moist, sheltered woodland environments—covering decaying wood, exposed path banks, tree bases, and acidic forest floors.
